How to register your device on WITS-WIFI-MOBILE

Welcome to your connected campus! Here's how you can access our WiFi with any device.

The WITS-WIFI-MOBILE Wireless Network is designed for tablet, phablets and smartphone devices. Before you can proceed with the configuration guide below to register your devices; you will need the following information:

1. Username – This is your Student or Staff Number at the University

2. Password – This is the same password you use to access University resources e.g. Internet, Email, etc.

3. Wireless network card address (MAC address) of your tablet, phablet or smartphone device

Configuration Guide

Please note that this guide was created on an Android Device running version 4.4.2. So some screens might appear differently depending on the device you are using.

Step 1

On your phone navigate to > Settings > Wi-Fi and ensure your wireless network is switched on.  Connect to the Wits-Wifi-Mobile wireless network as shown below

 

Step 2

On some devices you will get a pop up asking you to sign in. On other devices you will need to open up your web browser to start browsing to a website. When you attempt to browse, you will get the screen below providing you with information regarding this wireless service. Please read carefully.

 

 

Step 3

Tap the web link, shown below, located towards the end of the information screen

 

 

The screen shown below will appear.

Step 4

Complete the information as displayed below taking special care when inputting the following information and then tap > Submit :

Username Field – To be completed with your Student or Staff Number provided by the University. Please type this in lower case

Password – This is the same password you use to access University resources e.g. Internet, Email, etc. Please note that passwords are case sensitive

MAC address – This is the wireless network card address of your tablet, phablet or smartphone device which is available on your device.

 

N.B.

1.  To locate the MAC Address of your iPad or iPhone:

1.1  Tap Settings.

1.2  Select General.

1.3  Select About.

1.4  The Mac address is listed as Wi-Fi Address.

2.  To locate the MAC Address of your of your Android phone or tablet:

2.1  Press the Home button at the bottom of the phone.

2.2  Press the Menu button.

2.3  Tap Settings.

2.4  Tap Wireless & Networks.

2.5  If Wi-Fi is not already selected, tap Wi-Fi to turn it on.

2.6  Press the Back button.

2.7  Tap About Phone.

2.8  Tap Status.

2.9  Scroll down until you locate the Wi-Fi MAC address

3.  To locate the MAC Address of your BlackBerry Device Software 4.5 to 5.0:

3.1  From the home screen, click Options > Status.

3.2  The WLAN MAC field displays the MAC address for the smartphone.

4.  To locate the MAC Address of your BlackBerry Device Software 6 to 7.1:

4.1  From the home screen, select Setup > Options > Device > Device and Status Information.

4.2  The WLAN MAC field displays the MAC address for the smartphone. 

5.  To locate the MAC Address of your BlackBerry 10 OS:

5.1  From the home screen select Settings > Network Connections > Wi-Fi > Advanced.

5.2  In the Diagnostic Information drop-down, select  Device Information.

5.3  The Physical Address field displays the MAC address for the smartphone.

6.  To locate the MAC Address of your Windows Mobile Device:

6.1  On Start, flick left to the App list.

6.2  Tap Settings

6.3  Tap About

6.4  Tap More info.

6.5  Note the MAC Address.

 

Step 5

After Tapping > Submit the screen below appears confirming that the Mac Address was successfully added and an account for the device was created.

Click on > Done to begin browsing the internet or using the apps from your mobile device
