Gmail email for Wits students

Wits students can now use the gmail platform for all their student needs

Wits, in conjunction with CNS, has rolled out a new Student email system based on the Google platform, on 16th January, 2015.

This system became available to all qualifying students who registered for the 2015 academic year.

The email launch page is on http://www.wits.ac.za/mywits/19209/mywits.html web page. In order to access mail from the site, click on email and then on the Gmail icon.

The email format remains the same i.e. StudentNumber@students.wits.ac.za

Returning students need to activate their new account from the http://www.wits.ac.za/mywits/19209/mywits.html web page, by clicking on email and then clicking on the Zimbra to GMail icon.

  1. No old/existing email has been migrated to the new email system. There is a facility on the site to request the email migration if required.
  2. This will be a scheduled migration; it will take place as a background service and the emails will start to appear in the new mailbox as the migration progresses.
  3. Mobile devices previously setup to gain access to the old student email account will need to be setup and configured to access the new email system again. Students who have setup forwarding emails to another service provider need to activate the account and setup the forwarding again.

Help on how to configure the mobile devices and how to forward email is available on http://www.wits.ac.za/mywits/19209/mywits.html, by clicking on email and then clicking on the FAQ icon. 

Access to the old email system (Zimbra) is also available on the my.wits.ac.za; click email and click on the Zimbra icon. The old email system does not receive email any more but is available for viewing until the 27 February 2015.
