Wits-e ready to Launch

The new official Wits electronic learning environment, Wits-e is ready to roll. Built on the open source Sakai platform Wits-e provides an environment for learning and interaction for lecturers and students at the University

eLSI (eLearning Support and Innovation are both pleased and excited to announce that the public launch of Wits-e, an open source, interoperable, enterprise ready platform for elearning and collaboration.  It is anticipated that Sakai  will be used by staff and students on campus to create a supportive environment that will promote rapid knowledge exchange - irrespective of time and distance and dependent only on access to people and institutional networks.

Wits-e is built on the Sakai platform, as it offered an integrated, functionally rich and robust environment that was also responsive to the collaborative teaching, learning and research needs of its user community. The decision to select  Sakai as the official platform to provide students, faculty, staff and guests with new teaching, learning opportunities has been thorough process. A working group comprising representatives of key stakeholders was established and initiated a project to evaluate open source LMS solution. The group agreed that both Moodle and Sakai satisfy the requirements of the Evaluation Criteria in terms of functionality, technology, costs, viability, and sustainability. This group was tasked with analyzing the advantages of Sakai vs. Moodle and they recommended that Wits adopt Sakai. The recommendation was based on the functional advantage of Sakai over Moodle, the suitability of the Sakai platform for a Higher Ed environment, the cost, the viability of its developer community and suitability of the platform for Wits teaching, learning & research needs.

Since March this year, when eLSI was charged with implementing Sakai by Prof Ballim, the unit has been involved  in installing, configuring and customising the platform. eLSI  are now in the process of communicating with the campus community to configure and adapt the new environment to ensure that it meets Wits specific elearning needs.
